How to get started in photography?

Getting started in photography

The world of photography can be an intimidating one, but it’s never been easier to get started. With the right tools and a bit of guidance, anyone can become a confident photographer. Here are a few tips to help you get off on the right foot.

1. Choose Your Camera

The first step in getting started with photography is selecting the right camera for your needs. If you’re just learning, you may not want to invest a lot of money into an expensive DSLR camera; instead look for options that will provide good quality pictures at reasonable prices. Consider how many megapixels and features like zoom and autofocus that the camera offers.  A good place to start are APS-C cameras, which provide the DSLR experience for a fraction for the cost of a full frame camera.  The main difference is the size of the sensor.  For beginners, this option will give you room to explore and try out things like different lenses and focal lengths as well as shooting in manual and playing with the both the shutter speed and aperture to get the demurred look you want.  The camera I started with was the Nikon D3100 and the Sony a6300.  The Sony a6000 series are great camera under a $1000.  So if you are looking to get into the world of photography, then those are a great place to start.

2. Get Comfortable with Your Camera

Once you have chosen your camera, it’s important to get comfortable with all its functions before you start shooting images. Read the manual carefully and learn about all the different settings that your camera has available for use. Additionally, take some practice shots so you can learn how to adjust your exposure and shutter speed appropriately for different lighting situations.  This is important in the types of photography like portrait, landscapes or street, but also in the style you want to be known for.  By learning to adjust various settings you can capture multiple unique looks of the same shot like using lower shutter speeds to get motion blur and lower aperture to capture depth of field and that blurry background.

3.Explore Different Photography Styles

Now that you know how to use your camera, it’s time to start exploring various types of photography styles such as landscape, portrait or macro photography among others. These styles are great ways to begin expanding your understanding of photography while still taking incredible shots! Start by researching each style online and looking through photo galleries; this will help give you ideas as well as help inspire creativity within yourself when it comes time to actually shoot something new!  I love shooting landscapes and street photography.  Street photography is fun for so many reasons.  I love capture the hustle and bustle of city streets and try and tell a story with a collection of shots.  Capturing movement is important when shooting street.  Mastering shutter speed and aperture in tandem can help you capture that movement well.

4. Practice Makes Perfect

Finally, remember that practice is essential in photography! Don’t expect perfection from yourself but do strive towards excellence each time out there behind the lens! Take lots of photos and look back at them periodically—this way, you can learn from mistakes and create progressively better images over time. Don’t forget to experiment with color balance or digital effects too – these small changes can drastically alter how an image turns out!  Once you are done shooting don’t forget to edit.  Editing is another great way to learn styles.  By knowing your editing style it can help you in the future when you’re out shooting.  Editing will also tell you how out shot each photo and you can learn what to keep doing and what to change.

The most important thing about starting in photography is getting out there and doing it.  Practice, practice, practice.  Try new things.  Edit and repeat and happy shooting and have fun.

At the end of the day, photography is a craft and it takes practice to master it. With the right camera and a willingness to learn, anyone can become an excellent photographer in no time. So get out there and start taking some amazing photos!
